To start off this edition of Michigan Travel Tips, I have to talk about lights. For some time--months and months--I have been sort of planning to talk about the headlights of vehicles these days, and I finally get to the subject here because of information that I became aware of since I had published the previous edition of Michigan Travel Tips. I think the makers of cars have gone too far in relation to making the headlights of cars shine. The lights of cars today are too bright, especially for drivers on two-lane roads that have cars--especially a string of cars--coming at them. The lights of oncoming cars blank out the ability for a driver to see things off away of the approaching cars ahead. For a number of decades, I have heard people say that the lights are not bright enough for a driver to see down the road. Well, with LED-systems, the lights are too bright today, and it is annoying to me. And here is the big thing, too. For decades, if a light bulb went out on a car, you could replace the light bulb for little money. I recently learned that changing a light string or like thing on some vehicles can be super expensive on cars of recent history. For instance, if you have a vehicle like a GMC Acadia and if the running-light group (that string like thing) goes out on a headlight unit, you cannot simply replace the light group--you have to replace the entire headlight unit. A headlight unit can cost from $500 to $1,600, and the cost depends on how it is replaced, such as at an independent car-repair business or a dealership. That is jackass stuff. It is more stupidity from auto makers, probably involving girlie guys and involving girls in the engineering areas who are not smart enough to design something that is easily and expensively repaired, having not really worked on cars and such in the field. Eggheads who lack commonsense seem to be working at the auto companies. By the way, I have this extra note. Under the body of a car, you can find aluminum heat shields, which are made of very thin and lightweight aluminum, and those are often held in with bolt-and-nut units, which rust in a few years. I suggest it would be better to have such heat shields held in place with plastic push nuts. Then, heat shields can be removed easily, if work on something under the car needs has to be done and a heat shield is in the way, and a corroded heat shield can easily be replaced with a new one, and the push nuts are lightweight and do last long when used in a place that does not get hit with direct sunlight. Well, I guess no one at the engineering departments at the auto makers gets that "light-bulb-over-the-head" thing these days. Hey, try this! Why not use stainless-steel nuts and bolts to hold exhaust units in place? Do not worry about flange joints coming apart! Use the double-nut idea if you have to. Stainless-steel nuts and bolts are strong enough to hold exhaust systems, and such nuts and bolts will not go to crap, such as at the point where an exhaust manifold meets exhaust pipe proper. Exhaust-replacement jobs would be less expensive and less time-wasting with stainless-steel parts. Oh, do not give me the idea that stainless-steel nuts and bolts will deteriorate quickly. I have seen fifty years of regular steel--and even hard steel--nuts and bolts going to crap under cars, especially at the output point of an exhaust manifold. Do you see the "light"?
And that is how I see things, and I hope you see the light and see the reminder of this edition of Michigan Travels Tips.
Warning announcement! Because of incidents at schools for children and incidents at other places for people in general tied to "Sharia" or "Islamic Law" or even the religion/political system known as "Islam," I now regularly have this paragraph as a part of each edition of Michigan Travel Tips. The governmental system of the United States of America based on The U.S. Constitution and "Sharia" or, informally, Islamic law, are not compatible and cannot co-exist, and one reason is "Sharia" (et cetera) is a political system, in which there is one-party rule, and that one party is basically made up or controlled by religious leaders who base all the ways of their culture or society on "Sharia" or "Islamic Law." Those who uphold and practice "Sharia" have no tolerance for the existence of Christianity or Buddhism or Hinduism or non-religion, and that is a fact, and "Sharia" is a political system in which women are second-rate human bodies and in which clergy can be involved in determining business transactions, and there is no "freedom of speech" tied to politics in a society related to "Sharia." When you travel around Michigan and in other states of the country, watch for signs that rotten people are trying to teach you or family members, especially children, that "Sharia" is good and "Allah" is good and teach you or family members that the United States of America is bad and that, for instance, Christianity and Buddhism and Hinduism are bad, which I have evidence is happening and which is being brought about by people who are clearly working to make "Sharia" a dominant political system in the world (it is a political system as rotten as socialism and fascism and communism are, since it promotes violence and thuggery and coercion, and it promotes killing of non-followers behind the face of religion and a god, Allah). By the way, a society based on "Sharia" really creates nothing in the long run and does not advance the human society as a whole since it is too busy suppressing the ideas of people and keeping the ideas of the society based on ways of only a few minds up front (the political leaders), whose main purpose is to keep themselves enriched through the work of others, the many--it is a gang-run society really. Yes, if you run across people pushing the idea that Muslim stuff--particularly the true The Quran and not the translations of The Quran that are faked to hide the true nature of Islam--is better than the U.S. is, especially to little children, go public and make it known to other good people and fight back against it.
Lighthouses are still in operation on the Great Lakes, but; in the winter, the lighthouse are shut down, which has been the rule for lighthouse operations since the middle of the 1800s. A number of lighthouses are museums, and given this is winter time, they are shut down at this time. Of the lighthouses that are museums, most are operated as a stand-alone museum that is operated by some type of group. One of the big exceptions are four lights that are under the supervision of the Sable Points Lighthouse Keepers Association. That entity watches over the Big Sable Point Lighthouse (which is a little north of Ludington (of Mason County) and along Lake Michigan), the Ludington Breakwater Light (which is at Ludington (of Mason County) and along Lake Michigan), the Little Sable Point Lighthouse (which is a location a little south of Ludington (of Mason County) and along Lake Michigan), and the White River Light Station and Museum (which is location at Whitehall (of Oceana County) and along Lake Michigan). The distance between White River Light Station and Big Sable Point Lighthouse (with the other two lights set between them) is some 60 miles, and that means is it possible--it is possible--to see the four lights on one day. I do note that, generally, speaking the lights are open from late morning to late afternoon, covering a four or five hour period--on the days that the places are open. For the 2025 tourist season, the four lights will be open seven days a week from about May 22, 2025, to September 7, 2025, as a rule, but the Big Sable Point Lighthouse does not get opened up for the season till July 1, 2025. For exact hours, you should see the website related to the Sable Points Lighthouse Keepers Association. One reason to see the four lights is you will see the difference between the real Fourth Order Fresnel lens (which is at White River Light Station Museum) and a real Third Order Fresnel Lens (which is at the Little Sable Point Lighthouse). Oh, the smaller that the number is when defining a lens, the bigger the lens is. There is a problem with seeing the two lenses. Fourth Order and Third Order have existed in many types and styles, such as rotating and non-rotating, so anytime you make a comparison of a Fourth Order and a Third Order, it will very likely not be a comparison of the same type of structure (with a bigger size and a smaller size). At least, a person, such as a child, can see the difference in sizes between a Fourth Order and a Third Order related to the Sable Points Lighthouse Keepers Association by seeing the two lenses that can be seen on a trip related to the four lights. Generally speaking, the light from a Third Order lens can be seen from a greater distance from shore than that of a Fourth Order lens can be, which can be at about 12 miles. A trip to the four lights gives a person the ability to see all types of old artifacts and photographs and paintings on a single day. I do note that, with the four lights, there is a fee charged to go up the towers, such as about $8.00 for an adult for each tower. Incidentally, to see a rare example of a six-sided rotating Fourth Order Fresnel Lens with bulls-eyes (and with the five-three prism structure for each side), you can see my video on YouTube at the channel for "The Hologlobe Press" that shows how I made a model of 40 Mile Point Lighthouse (of the Rogers City area of Presque County).
Enjoy your traveling in Michigan!
And keep aware of the rotten people in Michigan.
Stay well!
Victor
